The two games I choose to write about are Darfur is Dying and Planet Green. These two games have similar and different ways of showing a problem and giving a solution. Darfur is Dying is a game about the people of Darfur, Sudan who live their lives day by day avoiding being captured and killed. Planet Green is about saving the planet one less trip in your car at a time. Both Darfur is Dying and Planet Green portray two major problems in society, but i believe that Planet Earth is more efficient at doing so and awaring the users.
The game Darfur is Dying starts off where you choose a character from a family. The ages and sex vary, you can choose to be a boy or a girl ages 10-14. After you choose one you then have to run to a well to get water for ur camp. sounds easy right? Well as you are running for the water you have to hide from the militia that is out to get you. There are rocks and small scrubs to hide behind as the truck holding the capturers passes you by. If you get caughta screen pops up and tells you what happens to you once they have you. For example, if I choose to be a younger girl chances are I am rapped and tortured by the men in the militia. If I were to have choosen a boy they would most likely kill me. If and when you reach the well and retrieve the water you then must run it all the way back wihout getting caugh, except this time since you are holding water you run much slower. Back at camp little boxes pop up around the camp to tell you things that are going on that you may experience if you wee really living there. At the bottem of the game screen there is a place to click if you would like to help with the real situation in Darfur. The game is very good with educating the users and providing a way to help.
Planet Green is a game made to make people aware of global warming and ways to help reverse it. The game allows the user to pick a person they want to be, after doing that then you can choose a ride of your choice, from walking to a SUV. Then you are to go around the town finding ways to save energy and help the planet. In one senarrio you are inside a house and there are 12 things that are wasting energy. You have to click on all of them within a time limit. When you do click on it a screen pops up and tells you facts about the appliance you just fixed and how it was harming the planet. This game is very informative and educates people in a fun useful way. throughout the game you are learning more and more ways to save the planet and being informed of the dangers of global warming. Many people do not know what to do to help but this game provides many ways from big to small in doing so.
As you can see both Darfur is Dying and Planet Green are very much alike and in some ways different. They both allow you to choose a player similar to yourself so it kinda puts you in the game. also Darfur is Dying does the same as Planet Green in informing the players by using pop ups with facts about the certain objects it is talking about. For example when there is a broken seal over the window in a house on the boxes tell you facts about how much air is wasted and how much energy is uses to keep the house cool, etc. The same with Darfur, when something happens in the camp a box pops up and gives real life details about what is going on and how to fix it. The both games involve you emotionally and make you think about how you can really help out. Darfur gives you the oppertunity to help the real cause by donating and making others aware, Planet Green gets you invoved also by making you think and educating you in ways of saving the earth at home and in normal life situations. Although they have many similarities they are also different. Darfur is a game about things that do not nescissarly involve everyone around the world only the people of Sudan. Plant Green includes everyone because it is a major issue that could determine future generations and the health of our planet. Also Planet Green educates you a little better than Darfur because it has more situations you have to go through and you learn by doing. Darfur is not as informative as Planet Green in the since of what the main problem is. Both games are perfect examples of serious and adverse games, they present a problem and way of helping. After you play these games you are sure to turn of an extra light or donate to a good cause.
